Familiar Avalon name opens Cape May Fish Market
Fred Sylvester, who along with his brother Steve owned and operated Sylvester's Seafood in Avalon for decades, is now operating the Cape May Fish Market on the Washington Street Mall. The Sylvesters sold the business in 2001 to Bill Selgrath, who still owns and operates the Avalon restaurant and market. Fred, after stints at the Motor Boast Club and thee Windrift, among others, is the now the manager of the 82-seat (30-some outside) Cape May Fish Market, which is really three restaurants in one. There is the fish market where you can pick out fresh, local fish and hand-carved steaks to take home to cook, you can order takeout, or eat in the restaurant. Because of construction problems, the restaurant did not open until earlier this month, but Fred said he plans on staying open until the holidays, when he'll shut it down until the following May. I'll have a Cape Cuisine column coming soon on the Cape May Fish Market.
