World tallest crepe in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY -- Resort business owner Gus Kazakos will attempt to build the world’s largest, tallest crepe. He plans to unveil the effort on Thursday, Aug. 7 at his Boardwalk restaurant. The native of Greece has been enthusiastic about crepes ever since he introduced them at his restaurant in Greece years ago.

The mixture of Greek Gyros and French crepes proved popular among his customer. So when he opened at the colony Walk this spring he brought the combination to Ocean City. To draw attention to his new establishment, Gus decided to construct the world’s tallest crepe.

It will take Gus and his buddies four days to complete the 4-foot monument to Crepedom. They started work on it today (Monday) and will unveil the colossal crepe on Thursday at OPA, his Boardwalk store at the Colony Walk between 9th and 10th streets.

The plan is to make 150 crepes a day and debut the finished product at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. After it is measured, photographed and generally admired it will be served free of charge to the public.

The Guinness Book of World Records wanted an $800 fee to document the attempt. Gus decided to wait until next year when he has all of the kinks worked out and perhaps build a 5-foot crepe.

The crepes will be made on approximately 450 ovals of dough piled on top of each other and filled with chocolate chip cookies and chocolate syrup. Gus is not sure how much the crepe will weigh, the best estimate is “a lot.”

Opa Gyros and Crepes is a genial family business with wife Froso and daughters Maria and Eritta all involved. “Opa” (pronounced OPE AH!) is an exclamation of enthusiasm and happiness that Greeks make when performing their lively native dances.
