Waddya Think about new Wadda Juice?

Wadda Juice and Wadda Blast are new children's drinks entering a market that experts think will grow by the more than double the average for the soft drink industry. With growing concern over obese children, big company soft drinks took a sales hit in the past year while kid-targeted water bottles and nutrition and sports drinks have exploded. Sales are expected to near $6 billion by 2012, according to Packaged Facts, a market research firm.

Enter Wadda Juice and Wadda Blast, boasting seven flavors, 50 percent less sugar, fewer carbs and less sodium than most juices but still offering 100 percent of the RDA recommendation for vitamin C. And they come in spill proof containers that kids can carry around the house, drink in cars or at the dinner table without fear of spills and stained shirts, carpets or couches.

How do they taste? My kids weren't thrilled with them, but they're probably on the upper echelon of the target market. They're 9 and 12. If kids are given these juices before acquiring a taste for Hi-C and Hawaiian Punch, they'll probably like them. I tried a couple and the Wadda Blast flavors -- Lemonade, Watermelon and Lodda Fruit --  were pretty good, but the one Wadda Juice I had -- Wild Berry -- almost came back up. There's also Apple and White Grape juice flavors. "Just pure juice and purified water" is one of the marketing slogans.

They say it's carried in Shop Rite and Whole Foods among other stores. They're beginning to sell them to school to be sold during lunch, which can only be a good thing.

I think the juices being lower in calories sound like a beginning but really juices are still mainly sugar. And walking around with juice is not so great for teeth. A drink at a meal OK, but in between walking around with water is better or best. And milk is still a drink needed by children for building bones....the fat free/low fat flavored milks are better. The juice drinks are still calories and easy to digest calories at that.
